Neal Shusterman, author of more than 30 young adult novels, spends most of his time traveling to schools speaking to students. On October 27 , we were delighted to have him as our guest at an assembly. His question-and-answer presentation was a big hit since our students guided the event with questions of relevance to them. Mr. Shusterman revealed how he gets his ideas for books and how long it takes to write a book. He also discussed some of his books in detail and emphasized the influence teachers and students have on his writing.
Later that evening, Franklin Community Middle School hosted a community event and book signing that drew a crowd of over 100. Guests were treated to a reading of Mr. Shusterman’s new book, Everwild, the second in the Everlost trilogy. Most students had read The Schwa Was Here and were delighted to hear the author read from his new novel, Antsy Does Time. Mr. Shusterman once again highlighted some details from his novels, read excerpts, and discussed how ideas come to him in everyday situations. He also talked about how important the writing process is and showed his notebook and a draft of Everwild, which was covered with Post-It notes from his editor. This made quite a statement to the fact that he often revises eight or nine times before the book is published. Students and parents were very impressed with Mr. Shusterman and eager to get in line to have their books signed. Many parents and students were even able to purchase a limited edition of Antsy Does Time and have it signed by Mr. Shusterman. It was a very memorable evening for Franklin Community Middle School.
