Boston Middle School: A Community of Readers

by Fay Iorio          Boston Middle School

We are honored to serve as one of the pilot schools chosen by the Middle Grades Reading Network.  We hope many of you will come and visit us.  We are proud of the work we are doing as one of the 59 middle grades schools in Indiana that teach reading as a separate subject taught by licensed reading teachers.

Our building-based reading program is enhanced by a strong partnership with the LaPorte County Public Library.  We are most fortunate that the library is located only two blocks from our facility.  This fact helps to lend itself to creative partnering.  Mary Hedge, community service librarian, and Margaret Kownover, children’s department assistant, enjoy coming to Boston to present booktalks 12 times a year for our students.

In addition, the library sponsors and we participate in their “Name that Book” competition.  Selected students from our building serve on the young adult advisory board at the public library, and our students can be found there in significant numbers at the close of each school day.  Summer reading programs are very popular with our students, along with other programs sponsored by the public library.  Many of our students make the short trek to the public facility during the school day to do their research when our facility is booked for that type of activity.

Yes, our reading program is blooming at Boston!  We are thankful to our public library for working so closely with us to develop lifelong learners and readers—after all, isn’t that our real purpose?  I would urge you to visit as soon as possible with your public library personnel and begin to forge a positive working partnership.
