When Brenda Strimple, our school librarian, approached me with information on a training session to be given in August for the Reading Is FAME Program, I must say I was excited and highly interested in anything that would help my students become better readers.  The training sessions organized by the Middle Grades Reading Network and given by Darien Maguire from Girls and Boys Town were excellent, and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested.

Everyone at the August workshop left with all the materials needed to begin the Reading Is FAME Program at their individual schools in the fall.

I work with LD students in both the junior high and the high school.  I wanted to start the program with one high school class of freshmen and one junior high class.  Most of the students have responded positively to the program.  One student in particular has always struggled with reading, and he amazes himself every Friday when we test skills mastered for the week.

I think this is an excellent program for those students who have somewhere down the line missed out on the skills that they should be bringing to the junior high level.  The activities, computer review of skills, oral reading, and testing methods are all set up to work with older students and allow them the security to learn without embarrassment.  Because of my students’ success I plan to continue this program during the next school year.
