Pilot Program Takes Off

As a teacher of primarily reading and language arts for the past 29 years, I have seen several reading programs come and go.  When I was asked by the principal at the end of the 1999-2000 school year to teach a pilot reading program called Reading Is FAME from Boys Town, I was a bit apprehensive.  However, I agreed to attend the two-day training workshop.

At the end of the first session, I saw the possibilities that Reading Is FAME held for middle grades students.  When I finished the second day of training, I really felt that Reading Is FAME could impact the needs of many students.  I also  knew that I had the support of the Boys Town program staff.

Presently I am using the program one period each day.  We are using the first level—Foundations.  My students have made improvement in spelling and word attack skills.  They adapted quickly to the structure of the program and have become more confident readers.  Students tell me that they enjoy the activities and feel successful.

Based on the success of the program, Horizon Middle School is considering adding Reading Is FAME as a full-time program for the 2001-2002 school year.
