There Are Many Sources for Middle Grades Reading Course Supplementary Materials

     As more and more Indiana middle grades schools provide reading courses, all of their students need access to current instructional materials at appropriate levels the same as they need access to current school library books to practice their reading.  Social studies courses call for maps and globes.  Science courses call for microscopes and chemicals.  Both of these areas use textbooks along with supplementary items.  Reading courses need the same level of support.

      Indiana’s program description for reading courses 0480-06, 0480-07, and 0480-08 includes word recognition skills, vocabulary building, and comprehension.  Students may be reading below, at, or above their grade placement, so materials are needed to provide each student with instruction at the appropriate level.

      Fortunately, there are many companies that publish supplementary middle grades reading materials.  The following is a list of companies and materials that are available for school corporations to provide for their middle grades reading students.  Materials could be replaced annually if consumed by students; however, most of the materials do not have to be consumed and can last for many years through the use of locally developed answer sheets.
