Indiana Public Libraries Have High Book Circulation
by Jack Humphrey
Indiana schools can be proud of the lifelong readers they have produced through the years. In all the 50 states and District of Columbia according to the latest figures from the National Center for Education Statistics, Indiana public libraries rank second by circulating 10.9 books per resident per year. The average for the nation is 6.6 books.
This high circulation is the result of excellent public libraries and high value placed on reading by Hoosiers. To maintain this high ranking, middle grades schools can help by ensuring that students are connected with their public libraries.
Many middle grades students do not have public library cards. In fact, it is possible that some students have never visited their public library. Reading teachers will want to visit the local public library to invite public librarians to classrooms, plan visits to the public library, and help students obtain public library cards.
