Materials for Middle Grades Reading Teachers by Jack Humphrey |
In addition to access to current, interesting, and useful school library books, middle grades reading classes benefit from a variety of materials for middle level reading courses 0480-06, 0480-07, and 0480-08 for Grades 6, 7, and 8. For a copy of the course descriptions, see </middlelevelreading.htm>. Materials from each of the following categories are needed for each middle grades reading teacher:
Literature. Adopt a series from the state textbook adoption list.
Newspapers. Purchase newspapers for systematic instruction in the use of newspapers and to develop the habit of reading the newspaper. Newspaper content changes daily, so news-
papers can be used by all reading classes without duplicating efforts.
Young Hoosier Book Award Books. Purchase charts and other incentive materials for each classroom from the Indiana Library Federation; purchase books and place them in the school library. The books on the list change yearly, so they can be used by all middle grades students.
Developmental Reading Materials. Choose appropriate materials for the reading levels of students. Restrict materials to grade levels so that students have access to different materials from grade to grade. Companies that provide middle grades reading materials include AGS Publishing, Continental Press, Curriculum Associates, Educators Publishing Service, Globe Fearon, Jamestown Education, Modern Curriculum Press, New Readers Press, Options Publishing Inc., Phoenix Learning, Sopris West, SRA/McGraw-Hill, Steck-Vaughn, Teachers College Press, and J. Weston Walch.
Reading Posters. Provide teachers with reading posters from sources such as ALA Graphics of the American Library Association. Use different posters in various grade classrooms.
Reading Tests. Provide each school with a set of easily teacher-scored and reusable standardized reading tests, such as the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests from Riverside Publishing.
