SPREADING THE WEALTH

Holly Hoops, Franklin College

Like many other student teachers, I have been trying to create my own resource file for the past four years. I have many old textbooks, workbooks, worksheets, and short stories. However, I was struggling to build my own personal library for my own classroom. I don’t know what grade I will be teaching next fall, but I do know that I want a large selection for all age levels. It’s funny how things work out.

I was overjoyed when I opened a box of 25 new young adult books, reading treasures from the Middle Grades Reading Network. When I told my cooperating teacher about the books, she was astounded. For the past six years, she  taught only writing. When the curriculum changed this year, she had to add reading to her plans. These books were like an answered prayer.

The students were also excited about receiving new books, many of which have won awards or ranking on the New York Times Bestseller List. I’m so very glad that I am able to share these books with my students. Many of them have expressed their appreciation and enthusiasm about having them in the classroom to read and enjoy.
